First Annual Abbotsford Environmental Leadership Awards February 9, 2012

On February 9, 2012, the Abbotsford Matsqui Rotary Club recognized business leaders or individuals for their demonstrated environmental leadership at the inaugural Abbotsford Environmental Leadership Awards held at the Ramada Plaza & Conference Center. Twenty-two individuals or businesses were nominated in one or more categories of Energy Saver, Water Saver, Agri-Links (local food), Green Projects, Green Leader, and Green Product/Service. The quality of nominations made selecting award recipients a challenging exercise for the judges.

The Abbotsford Farm & Country Market was awarded the Agri-links Award for providing the local community with diverse opportunities to display, sell, and purchase local fresh primary agricultural products and processed foods made with local fruits and produce within an engaging market setting.

The Abbotsford School District was awarded the Energy Saver Award for their comprehensive energy saving programs that included a variety of alternative energy pilot programs, conservation successes, and the varied educational initiatives offered to their students and staff alike.

Capt’n Crunch Auto Wrecking Ltd. was awarded the Green Product or Service Award for the sheer scope and diversity of the service they provide for homeowners and businesses alike. They are also recognized for the high standards they adhere to when conducting their auto-wrecking and recycling services.

Vedder Transportation Group were awarded the Green Project Award for their leadership in reducing their carbon footprint within their trucking firm and because of the influence they hold to change the way the transport business is conducted throughout the region proving that environmental protection can and do go hand in hand.

BARR Plastics Inc. was the Water Saver Award recipient for the role they played in providing both expertise and product in the realm of rain water harvesting to numerous local enterprises and for their own rain water conservation efforts which help demonstrate the effectiveness of their products.

Neil James Chair of the BC Auto-recyclers and president of Ralphs Recycled Autoparts has been named the Green Leader for his environmental leadership within the automotive recycling field spanning many years. Mr. James leadership and commitment to the development of a Code of Practice resulted in significant improvements to the environment in many BC communities and across the country.
